Click to enlarge. The colliery was situated south of Doncaster Road (A638) on Oakenshaw Lane, just south of a couple of sharp bends across a railway bridge. It is opposite Oakenshaw Farm. The colliery was closed (date not yet known) and became a training centre for the National Coal Board (NCB). The site is now in commercial use.

In the enlarged photograph, the spire of Wakefield Cathedral can just about be seen to the left of the electricity pylons.

More about the colliery

Oakenshaw is mentioned on this website Coal, Colliery and Mining Forum.

One person says, "do not know too much about Oakenshaw when it was a working colliery, but it was where I had my interview and induction test. Also1969/70 it is where I took my 1st and 2nd year mech. apprenticeship exams."
