Descendants of EDMUND WATERTON, son of Squire Charles Waterton the Naturalist

Edmund had six children by his first wife, Margaret Alicia Josephine Ennis, and two by his second wife, Ellen Mercer.

This line of the Waterton name continued through Charles Edmund Mary, his son by his first wife.

■ More information concerning the descendants of Edmund is included in this PDF document. (Nb. The information is not only incomplete but is also largely unverified and so should be treated with caution.)

The story of the Watertons after they left Walton Hall is largely outside the scope of this website, which is concerned principally with the Squire and his home village of Walton. However, it is pleasing to note that the family did not cease to exist following the death of the Squire and Edmund - see below.

The great, great, great grandson of the Squire (and thus the great, great grandson of Edmund) lives in Australia, his son, James is the last of the line. This extract dated 14th January 2005, is from a public message published in the guest book* of UK Villages (ukvillages.co.uk):

UK Villages - Guestbook entry - Walton (Wakefield City)-West Yorkshire

Comment: I found J S Sargent's web site about Walton (West Yorkshire) and Charles Waterton.

I am the great great great grandson of Charles Waterton, the Naturalist of Walton Hall, and I enjoyed the Walton website very much.

Thank you (even though the site implies I don't exist!) Although I was born in England, I am now living in Perth, Western Australia and my son James is the last of the male line descended from Charles Waterton the naturalist (although as you say, the senior male line dies out many centuries ago).

Thank you again. I have book marked the Walton/Waterton site and will watch its development with interest.

Best regards

* Some time after this entry was made, the guestbook in UK Villages was scrapped. Walton near Wakefield does not appear on the UK Villages site (as at 23 Jan 2019).
