This once formed one of the deepest opencast coal mines in the country reaching a depth of 250 feet. Now, it has become one of the most important inland bird sites in Yorkshire.

Situated on the boundary of the civil parishes of Walton and Crofton, with public road access via Crofton.
Hare Park itself is in the civil parish of Walton.


Horbury Lagoons
Horbury Lagoons
An area of washlands and lagoons situated to the east of Horbury Junction, with railway lines to the north and west, and the River Calder, Lupset Pond Stretch, to the south. The M1 motorway splits the lagoon area in two.

Newmillerdam
Newmillerdam
A village on the outskirts of Wakefield. The name also refers to the lake and country park adjacent to the village. The village is actually comprised of a number of smaller hamlets, Newbiggin Hill, Hill Top, Slack, Humley and Wood Moor Hill.

Oakenshaw Colliery
Oakenshaw Colliery

Another former colliery in the Walton area. This one is in Oakenshaw Lane, just across the parish boundary in Crofton.

Old Royston
Old Royston.
A small hamlet on Notton Lane and Navvy Lane just north of Royston. It is in Notton Civil Parish in the City of Wakefield Metropolitan District. See pictures in the Barnsley Canal section.

Robin Hood & Wentbridge
Robin Hood & Wentbridge

Wentbridge, which has a connection with Robin Hood.
It was also known by the name of Barnsdale.

Ryhill
Ryhill

A small village and civil parish situated on the B6428 road in the City of Wakefield Metropolitan District, approximately 7 miles south east of the city.
